Maestro Alberto Hold-Garrido was born in Barcelona, Spain and moved to Denmark when he was nine years old. After initial private studies in piano, violin, harmony and counterpoint, he entered the Royal Music Academy in Copenhagen studying choral and orchestral conducting with Dan-Olof Stenlund and Frans Rasmussen and later completed his conducting studies at the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Helsinki under Prof. Jorma Panula, Atso Almila, Professor Ilya Musin and guest teachers such as Leif Segerstam, Eri Klas, János Fürst and Wolf-Dieter Hauschild.

From 1990-1991 he also attended courses of musical phenomenology with S.Celibidache at the Gutenberg University in Mainz.

Shortly before receiving his diploma in 1994, he started working as assistant conductor at the Finnish National Opera where he was involved in several productions like “Lohengrin”, “Salome”, “Don Carlos”, “La Traviata”, “Otello”, “Il Barbiere di Siviglia”, “Das Rheingold” and “Die Walküre”, working closely with the important stage directors Professor Götz Friedrich, Professor August Everding and Gian-Carlo del Monaco and conductors like Leif Segerstam, Miguel A.Gomez Martinez, Eri Kla and Maurizio Barbacini.

In October 1996, he made his professional debut at the Finnish National Opera with Verdi's early opera “I due Foscari”.  Soon after he conducted performances of “Salome”, “La Traviata” and “Il Barbiere di Siviglia”.

In August 1997, Alberto Hold-Garrido was appointed Principal Conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera where he conducted numerous productions, as well as touring with the company at Deutsche Oper Berlin in January 1998 with a very successful production of Bellini's “Norma”.

Between 2000 and 2003, he served as Royal Swedish Opera’s principal conductor and he conducted the productions of “Don Carlos”, “La Boheme”, “Tannhäuser”, “Lohengrin” and “L’elisir d'amore”.   “L’elisir d’amore” was stage directed by Jonathan Miller.  The production of “Don Carlos” was recorded live on the Naxos label.

Alberto Hold-Garrido has appeared as guest a conductor in Estonia, Russia, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, UK, South America, China and South Korea.

Highlights include performances of “La Traviata” at the Frankfurt Opera, “Il Trovatore” at the Welsh National Opera, “Norma” and “Ernani” at Staatstheater St. Gallen. He has also conducted “Salome” in Moscow and a new production of “La Boheme” at Opernhaus Graz.

Alberto Hold-Garrido is a frequent guest conductor at the Finnish National Opera where he has lead productions of “Anna Bolena”, “La Boheme”, “Madame Butterfly” and the premieres of Puccini's “La Rondine”, Bellini's “Norma”, which was directed by Renata Scotto and Giordano's “Andrea Chénier” directed by Gian-Carlo del Monaco.

Since 2001, Maestro Hold-Garrido has been a guest conductor at the Savonlinna Opera Festival where he has conducted “Aida”, “Rigoletto” and “Lucia di Lammermoor”.  He toured with the Savonlinna Festival in Sweden, Denmark and Santiago in Chile with the productions of “Macbeth” and “Rigoletto”

Maestro Hold-Garrido has collaborated with the renowned artists such as: Renata Scotto, Joseph Calleja, Matti Salminen, Nina Stemme, Elina Garanca, Katarina Dalayman, Peter Mattei Gian-Carlo del Monaco, Dwayne Croft, Željko Lucic, Jaakko Ryhänen, Jorma Hynninen, Ingvar Wixell, Antonio Salvadori, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Inga Nielsen, Mlada Khudoley, Michele Crider, Marina Mescheriakowa, Camilla Nylund, Irina Mishura, Elisabeth Fierily, Enkelejda Shkola, Malena Ernman, Monica Groop, Raffaella Angeletti, Carmela Remigio, Alessandra Rezza, Olga Romanko, Gabriella Morigi, Gösta Winbergh, David Rendall, Carl Tanner, Mario Malagnini, Walter Fraccaro, Stefano Secco, Zoran Todorowich, Franz Grundheber, Anthony Michaels-Moore, , Oscar Hillebrandt, Mikhail Ryssov, Ekaterina Siurina and Eglise Gutierrez among numerous others.

Recently, he conducted “Un Ballo in Maschera” in Helsinki, “Aida” in Toulon and a revival of “Carmen” at the Finnish National Opera. He also conducted Puccini’s “Turandot” in December at Finnish National Opera, a production by Sonja Frisell based on a concept by the famous stage director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.

Since, October 2013 Alberto Hold-Garrido has been the  principal conductor of the Finnish Kuopio City Orchestra and in February 2015 he will conduct a new production of Verdi's “Nabucco” in Tampere Hall, Finland.
